History 479 - Nebraska and Great Plains History

Welcome

Welcome to the guide for Nebraska and Great Plains History. This is intended as a starting point, not an exhaustive list. I encourage you to look outside these resources if nothing here fits your interests - and consult with myself and your professor to identify resources to help you.

This guide focuses mostly on primary sources - for help finding secondary sources, or primary sources that cover areas outside Nebraska, consult the general History Subject Guide, or make an appointment so that I can assist you with the process.

Local and Regional Archives, Museums, Historical Societies and Other Repositories

Note that, while many of these resources may provide descriptions of their materials as well as a limited selection of digitized documents, you will need to plan a visit to the repository if you plan to use them for your research.

Digital Nebra Resources

Local History at UNK Library

  • Nebraska Documents: located on the 2nd floor of the UNK Library, opposite the book collection. Most items are not in the catalogue, so browsing is helpful. See charts on the sides of the shelves for suggestions of where to start, or consult a librarian.
  • Family, town, county, and regional histories: these are great sources - many are available in UNK Special Collections. Search the catalogue.
  • Local newspapers: many local newspapers are available on microfilm. Search for individual papers in the catalogue, or see the document below for the full list of papers. These are a great source for many types of research.
