Teacher Education: Citing Resources

A citation style dictates the information necessary for a citation and how the information is ordered, as well as punctuation and other formatting.

There are a number of different ways to cite resources in your paper. The citation style sometimes depends on the academic discipline involved. For instance:

• MLA (Modern Language Association) style is most commonly used to write papers and cite sources within the liberal arts and humanities
• APA (American Psychological Association) is used by Social Sciences, such as Psychology, Linguistics, Economics, and Criminology
• ASA (American Sociological Association) style is used by students (and scholars) in Sociology
• Chicago/Turabian style is generally used by Historians and the Fine Arts
