Each year a committee of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) identifies the best of the best in children's books. According to the Notables Criteria, "notable" is defined as: Worthy of note or notice, important, distinguished, outstanding.
Over the years, the name of the issuing committee has changed and the award name may have changed as well (we are unable to, at this time, confirm if the variety of names came from the issuing body or were a reflection of the journals used to curate this list); for uniformity on this guide and in our records, the names of "ALA Notable Books for Children" and "ALA Notable Children's Books" are used for all years of this award.
