Early Research Skills and Concepts (First-Year & Sophomore Level Courses)

Early Skills and Concepts will empathize foundational research skill building. 

Goals:

  1. Determine an information need.

  2. Identify search terms and create search strategies.

  3. Access information effectively.

  4. Differentiate between scholarly publications and more popular resources.

  5. Critically evaluate resources.

  6. Use information ethically and legally.


 

Learning Outcomes:

*Sessions will focus on 2 or 3 of the outcomes at a time.

  1. Identify keywords and main ideas to create search strings.

  2. Use reference sources to build foundational knowledge about a topic.

  3. Navigate online catalogs and databases effectively.

  4. Apply Boolean operators, keywords, and database filters to refine and focus search results.

  5. Distinguish between scholarly journals and popular resources to find expert-authored content.

  6. Evaluate information for its authority, bias, reasoning, and timeliness in order to select appropriate information for a specific purpose.

  7. Understand plagiarism and consistent source attribution standards.
