Calvin T. Ryan Library Policies

Laptop and Equipment Policy Form

Please read the following information carefully. If this is your first time checking out equipment from the Calvin T. Ryan Library, you must fill out this agreement form before checking out equipment. This agreement must be filled out and renewed annually.

If you have any questions, call Circulation at 308-865-8599 or visit the Circulation Desk in the Calvin T. Ryan Library.

Laptops

Laptops can be checked out for 3 days.  If laptops are not returned when they are due, you will accrue a $10 per day late fee.  When the laptop is one week (7 days) late, your library account will be suspended, and we will file a report with Student Affairs that states you are in violation of the Student Code of Conduct.  If the laptop is two weeks late, we will charge a $1500 replacement fee for the laptop and put a hold on your UNK account.  If the laptop is returned at this point, the $1500 replacement charge will be waived, but the daily late fee will not be waived.  If the laptop is three weeks (21 days) late, the police will be called.  We email due dates and overdue notices to your @lopers.unk.edu email; you are responsible for tracking your due date.

If the laptop is overdue 7-20 days late, then your laptop privileges will be revoked according to the following:

  • 1st time – for the rest of the semester,
  • 2nd time – for the rest of the academic year, and
  • 3rd time – permanently.

If you fail to return the laptop before the police are called, then your laptop privileges will be revoked permanently.

When you check out a laptop:

  • Do not deface the laptop (such as putting stickers on it, writing on it, etc),
  • Save your files to the cloud (OneDrive) or a USB drive,
  • Do not install unauthorized software,
  • Do not damage the screen, power cord, casing, etc,
  • Do not interfere with or otherwise circumvent security software or settings, and
  • Do not share the laptop with anyone else.

Laptop Renewals:

Laptops can be renewed up to 2 times, and then you must wait 24 hours before you can check out another laptop.

Returning/Checking in Laptops:

Make sure that you have removed all personal items from the bag before you return it.

Make sure that you have saved your files to the cloud or a USB drive.

Return the laptop, power adapter, and bag at the same time. Laptops that are returned without all these components cannot be checked in until everything is returned, and you will continue to incur the late fee of $10 per day until all components are returned.

If you accrue any late fees, you can “pay” them by using the Loper Success Hub. If you complete at least a 30-minute appointment about career development, tutoring, success coaching, foreign language support, or TRIO support services, you can remove $10 from your final fee.  You can do this multiple times.

Other Equipment

These are listed on the following page.  https://library.unk.edu/resources/technology.php

Equipment other than laptops are available for 3-day checkout and cannot be renewed.

Return equipment only to the Circulation Desk in the library. Do not return equipment to the outdoor book drop or any other library.

While equipment is in your possession, you are responsible for it at all times. You may not loan it to anyone else. Do not leave equipment unattended.

All parts of the equipment must be present to check in the item. If any parts are missing from the equipment, the item will stay on your record until every piece is returned.

If an item is not returned, you will be charged for the replacement.

If any equipment is damaged while in your possession, you will be responsible for the cost of the repairs, not to exceed the replacement cost of that item.

Replacement costs vary according to type and model of hardware.  We reserve the right to purchase a similar model in case of discontinuation.

Equipment cannot be used in violation of the law or of the University of Nebraska at Kearney policies.

If you check out a laptop or other equipment, then you acknowledge that you have read these rules and agree to them.
