Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People

The National Council for the Social Studies and the Children's Book Council publish an annual bibliography highlighting books from the field of Social Studies that are written for children in grades K-12.  Up until 1998, this award was known as the "Notable Children's Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies" award.

A note on the dating of this award

When this award was first presented, the published list did not include years in the award name.  The first printed list to include a date in the title was the list published in 1985, which included the year 1984 in the list title to reflect the year the books were published.  In 1994, the year listed in the title was the year the list was printed. The list published in 1995 reverted back to the year in which the books were published.  This changed again in the following year, 1996, in which the title reflected the year the list was published and not the year in which the books were published.  That dating policy, namely the policy of the year in the title of the list being the year the list was published instead of the year the books were published, has continued to this date.

The years on the listings found here on this guide reflect the year the award was presented to any given book.
